Spicy Sweet Potato Smash

Sweet Potato Mash

The vitamin content in sweet potatoes beats out the humble baking potato; it’s also the perfect canvas for bringing out spicy and exotic flavors; this dairy-free alternative to traditional mashed potatoes features a zesty dash of citrus and chili pepper. Feel free to dial up the heat by adding extra spice!

Ingredients: 
3 large sweet potatoes, peeled and quartered
1/2 cup orange juice, no pulp
2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 ½ teaspoons chili or chipotle powder
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions: 
  • Place sweet potatoes in a large pot of water, and bring to a boil; cook until soft, about 20 minutes.
  • Remove sweet potatoes to a large bowl and mash with a potato masher; you can also put them in a food processor.
  • Mix in the orange juice and zest, brown sugar, cinnamon and chili powder. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
